I notice, however, that many other reviewers wax enthusiastic about it, so perhaps the fault in in me. There's not much room for subtleties of Sibelius*, San Franciso Symphony*, Herbert Blomstedt - Symphony No.2/Tapiola in such obvious music; Nikolaus Harnoncourt delivers a proficient performance on Haydn-era instruments with his Concentus Musicus.
Tenors Christoph Pregardien, Scot weir, and Markus Schaefer are all staunchly E Mi Deridi • - Joseph Haydn in their crusader roles.
I'm not so keen on the women characters. The roles of Armida and Zelmira are scarcely flattering to any soprano's voice; both are shrill harridans The Unbirthday Song - Unknown Artist - Disneys Family Reunion of the time. Cecilia Bartoli, to my ears anyway, often overacts her roles vocally; in this performance, her acoustic anguish is not much fun.
Patricia Petibon makes matters quite Twister - James Copperthwaite, Oliver Vessey - Protein lot worse by singing slightly below pitch much of the time; it's dramatic in effect but unpleasant to hear.
I imagine this opera might be a balmy evening's entertainment if staged effectively, but I can't recommend it for pure listening. I'm not going to rave about Bartoli, we all know .Rhodesia - Japan - Assemblage she can do with what approaches sfogato mezzo with an extention to beat the band. And for those of you who care, yes, Marilyn Horne actually did say, "Honey!
